Savannah River Academy Cares

One of Savannah River Academy’s core values is service to our community. We offer unique, age appropriate opportunities for students to serve those in need. Periodically, we also invite families to a service project or event that is outside of regular school hours and requires more family engagement. Our past and current service projects include:

Red Cross “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” Campaign

The American Red Cross and the Augusta Fire Department held a “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life" home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event. SRA helped the Red Cross by canvassing neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms, and helping families create escape plans. The Red Cross responds to over 60,000 disasters each year, and the majority of these are home fires. A working smoke alarm cuts the risk of death by half! And, having an escape plan further improves one’s odds of survival. SRA was proud to help install over 100 smoke detectors in a local low income neighborhood. Learn more about Sound the Alarm.

Spooky to Be Hungry Food Drive

During the Month of October SRA families collected non-perishable food items to support the Golden Harvest Food Bank’s “Spooky to Be Hungry” food drive. We collected over three barrels of food to support this worthy cause. All food stays in our area to help those in need. Learn more about Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta creates, finds and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. RMHCA cares for families with critically injured and seriously ill children. They take care of the little things, like where to sleep and what to eat, so families can stay focused on what really matters; the health of their child. Located steps away from the Children's Hospital of Georgia, they provide a much needed retreat for families.SRA is pleased to partner with them to help children and families at CHOG. In addition to raising money to support the local Ronald McDonald House, SRA students make filled snack and lunch bags which are distributed to families staying at the house. Walk for Water

How would your child answer this question? “If you had to walk three miles every day to get filthy water, how would that impact your life? One of SRA’s Family Service Project is an experience to help our students and families think about the growing global water crisis, and spark conversation in the STEAM classroom about what methods can be developed and employed to combat this growing global problem. The Walk for Water campaign supports the nonprofit Water Mission (watermisssion.org), which works to combat the water crisis around the globe by providing clean water through engineering design, building, and implementing safe water sanitation and hygiene solutions for people in developing countries and disaster areas. Currently, this organization works in over 50 countries around the world, and has 650 community development and disaster projects underway. The Walk for Water Campaign simulates the trek millions of women and children make daily to retrieve water for their families, water which is often contaminated. SRA families raised money for this worthy cause and carried a two-gallon bucket on a 3.5 mile route into downtown Augusta. Learn more about Walk for Water.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

On November 3rd, Savannah River Academy participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Our team of students, parents, and teachers walked in honor of the residents of Claiborne’s Memory Care unit. Learn more about Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Pajama Program

The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and bedtime books for children in need. They partner with local organizations to identify children who most need the simple but magical gift of the makings of a peaceful night of sleep. SRA collected new pajamas and children’s books during the month of November. We were able to donate 35 pairs of pajamas and over 100 books to Neighbors to Families, a local organization that works to keep siblings together while in foster care. Claiborne Senior Living Community

SRA has partnered with the Claiborne to create relationships with their residents and engage in service projects throughout the year. Students learning cursive have a pen pal system where they write to and receive letters from their senior friends. Students also perform, visit, do craft projects, and make gifts for residents.
